officials reported Wednesday as they struggled to contain the nuclear crisis  

triggered by the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami five days earlier. 

Humanitarian needs burgeoned in the quake zone on the country's northeastern coast,  

where bitterly cold temperatures and snow on Wednesday added to survivors suffering. 」
