Julie said "Today is the First day of fall" in this morning news.
Today is September equinox (Autumn equinox in Japan)
The sun crosses the celestial equator and moves southward
in the northern hemisphere during the September equinox.
The location on the earth
where the sun is directly overhead at solar noon is known as the subsolar point.
The subsolar point occurs on the equator during the September equinox and March equinox.
At that time, the earth’s axis of rotation is perpendicular
to the line connecting the centers of the earth and the sun.
This is the time when many people believe that the earth experiences 12 hours of day and night. However, this is not exactly the case.
In many cultures, the September equinox is a sign of autumn in the northern hemisphere.
Higan, or Higan-e, is a week of Buddhist services observed in Japan
during both the September and March equinoxes.
Both equinoxes have been national holidays since the Meiji period (1868-1912).
Higan means the “other shore” and
refers to the spirits of the dead reaching Nirvana after crossing the river of existence.
It celebrates the spiritual move from the world of suffering to the world of enlightenment
and is a time to remember the dead by visiting, cleaning and decorating their graves.
It is a time for the Japanese to worship their imperial ancestors.
Living abroad, it is not easy to visit a grave.
Because we reap a benefit of ancestors and the acquaintance who died,
we exist now, we never forget it.
Yesterday, mommy knew it by coincidence that her old teacher of Tai chi chuan passed away.
When mommy learned Tai-chi in Hog Kong,
the teacher took care of her very much.
Mommy thought that the teacher is well in Canada where her children live.
About one week ago, the teacher died 71 years old for stomach cancer.
Mommy was able to master Tai chi chuan with exceptional speed,
because of the teacher's support.
I can never thank her enough for that.
Mommy pray that the soul of the teacher may rest in Heaven.
In Hong Kong (China) the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival,
is celebrated around (but not precisely) the time of the September equinox,
and mooncakes are eaten during this festival.
The teacher taught mommy which mooncake is the best.
In Japan, dumplings (Dango) are eaten.
Mommy made Mitarashi Dango.
Let's talk about ancestor with boys.
Don't forget appreciation.
