今日はまず公園内の南側へ向かいます。
駐車場がすぐ満杯になってしまうそうなので
朝7時過ぎロッジを出発。

Today, the family went toward south of the park.
They left the lodge at 7am because the parking lot of Mariposa Grove becomes full soon.
They found deers on their way.
まずセコイアの巨木で有名なマリポサ・グローブへ １時間程で到着。
駐車場付近にある木もすでに大きくてビックリです。
この大きさに圧倒されたものの、実際の所
セコイアは最も高い生物でも、最も幹の直径が太い生物ではないそうです。
もっとも長生きのセコイアは樹齢3000年と言われているそうですが、
これは最長ではなくヒッコリー松の標本に 樹齢4600年というものがあるそうです。
The family went to "Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias" in one hour.
They were impressed with the trees in the parking area.
These trees, Sequoiadendron giganteum, are not the oldest living things.
Although the oldest giant sequoias may exceed 3,000 years in age,
some living specimens of the ancient bristlecone pine, Pinus arista,
are more than 4,600 years old.
Giant sequoias are not the tallest living things and don't even have the greatest basal diameters.
グローブの中に入って行くと
まずこの倒木の根"Fallen Monarch"がありました。
生物学者によると、この樹は何世紀もの間、存在しているそうです。
樹の中のタンニン酸がバクテリアなどの最長を抑え、腐敗を抑制したからだそうです。
The family went into the grove on the main trail,
the first one that they found is the Fallen Monarch.
Biologists suspect that this tree has been down for centuries.
Tannic acid in the wood suppresses the initial growth of fungi and bacteria,
essentially arresting decay of a fallen sequoia.
20分ぐらい歩いた所に
樹齢1800年のグリズリージャイアントがあります。
大きな枝の直径が２ｍもあるのだそうです。
The Grizzly Giant is one of the largest tree in the Mariposa Grove
and is estimated to be 1,800 years old.
That huge limb on the south side is almost seven feet (2m) in diameter,
which is larger than the diameter of the trunk of any non-sequoia in the grove.
巨木から10分程の所にはカリフォルニアトンネルと言われる樹がありました。
1895年に馬車が通過できるようくりぬかれた樹です。
グローブ内にトンネルの樹は2本あったのですが
カリフォルニアトンネルだけが今でも生き残っているそうです。
Some 50 yards beyond the Grizzly Giant is the California Tunnel Tree,
cut in 1895 to Allow horse-drawn stages to pass through.
Two trees in this grove were tunneled,and this is the only one still standing.
This is big too.
また、巨木から0.8km 程トレイルを上がったところにあるのがフェイスフル・カップル
2本の木は根元部分だけが癒着し、上部は2本に分かれています。
About half mile up from the Grizzly Giant is the "Faithful Couple."
Here two large trees have fused together at their bases, but remain clearly separated above.
トレイルを引き続き0.4km 程行くと
火事によって自然に穴が開いたクローズピンという樹がありました。
洗濯バサミの様な形になったので付けられた名前だと思いますが
車が通れるほどの幅があります。
Along the trail, 1/4 mile further, is the "Clothespin Tree"
Numerous fires have excavated a natural tunnel wider than a car.
ここまででちょうどトレイルの半分。
この先にもまだまだ見どころはあったようなのですがギブアップして
ダディの案内で近道を下って行きました。

The family gave up the rest of the trail, upper area,
daddy showed them the short cut to the parking area.

グローブを後にサウスゲートを通り過ぎて車で10分程の所がワオナです。
ここには歴史資料館、ホテル、9ホールのゴルフコースがあります。
ボーイズはプレイしたかったなーと、ちょっと立ち寄って見ました。
The family left Mariposa Grove, passed the south gate,
and arrived at Waona Hotel in 10 minutes.
There was the 9hole golf course that boys wanted to play.
ワオナから1時間弱、山間道を走って
次に向かったのはグレイシアポイントです。
Next stop is Glacier Point.
Daddy drove on the mountain road carefully in one hour.
