1 Chichén Itzá

Cancun day 2
The family joined a tour of Mayan ruin.

The party left hotel zone early morning and went through jungle for two hours by a car,
The first stop was Chichén Itzá.
It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988.
The total area is 1.5 square miles.

It seems that there are many kind of admission fee.
Maybe, the admission of foreign tourist is most expensive.

This is the temple of Kukulkan usually referred to as El Castillo.
This step pyramid stands about 30m(98ft)
The architecture of the pyramid encodes precise information regarding the Mayan calendar.
Each face of the four-sided structure has a stairway with 91 steps,
which together with the shared step of the platform at the top,
add up to 365, the number of days in a year.
These stairways also divide the nine terraces of each side of the pyramid into eighteen segments, representing the eighteen months of the Mayan calendar.

The northern stairway was the principal sacred path leading to the summit.
On the Spring and Autumn equinoxes, in the late afternoon,
an interplay between the sun's light and the edges of the stepped terraces on the pyramid
creates a fascinating shadow display upon the sides of the northern stairway.
The triangles give the impression of a long tail leading downward to the head of Kukulkan.

Visitors can experience an acoustic phenomenon in front of this stairways
where the sound of a hand clap is echoed back as the chirping sound of the Quetzal bird

Only two faces were restored.
Other faces are now under restoration.

 This is Great ball court.
It is the largest and best preserved ball court in ancient Mesoamerica
Maya play ball game here,
Do you know where is a goal?

Is this?

This small ring is a goal
The leader of team which won became the sacrifice and Maya pray for a good harvest.

This is observatory, El Caracol.
Maya continued observation by the naked eye without the astronomical telescope
and created calendars without the error.

This is God Chac that is hook-nosed, reminds boys
Squid-ward that is a character of Sponge Bob.
 Pay for it!

Vending stalls and souvenir shops lined the street,
boys bought small souvenirs .

The party went to the next destination
