夏の旅行３日目(ジュノ) cruise day 3 (Juneau)

３日目の朝

外はこんな感じ。。。天気が悪くいかにも寒そう。

Day 3

Gray sky....it looks like rain.

ジュノに到着すると乗客達はそれぞれのエクスカージョンのため下船します。

雨が降っているので、バイクツアーやカヤックツアーの人は大変そうです。。。

家族はMendenhall Glacier へバスで向かいました。

The ship called at Juneau.

Almost all passenger went ashore for excursion. 

The family went to Mendenhall Glacier by bus.

バスを降りるとすぐに見えてくるこの氷河！青いです！

When you get off the bus,

you can find this glacier soon.

It's BLUE!

なぜ青いのでしょう？

氷河の氷は普通の氷とは異なり、長い年月をかけて圧縮され密度が高くなっています。

そのため氷中に含まれる空気の気泡が少なく、透明度も高く

太陽の光が透過すると、波長の短い青い光以外の光を吸収してしまうからだそうです。

冷凍庫の氷とはかなり違うということですね。

Why is glacier ice blue?

Because the dense ice of the glacier absorbs every other color of the spectrum except blue.

Its crystalline structure strongly scatters blue light. 

The ice on a glacier has been there for a really long time and has been compacted down 

so that its structure is pretty different from the ice you normally see. 

Glacial ice is a lot different from the frozen water you get out of the freezer.

ビジターセンターでは２００年前の氷もありましたが

こうするととてもクリアーな氷です。

This is 200 year-old ice.

この景色は日に日に変化し、かなり後退しているらしいです。

Mendenhall Glacier has been receding for over 200 years.

Although this scene is always changing.

その後ジュノの町に戻り

雨もやんだので、ケーブルカーに乗ってMt.Roberts へ

乗船している船が見えました。

After having come back to the town,

the family went to Mountain Roberts by cable car .

ネイチャーセンターには

飛べなくなってしまった白頭鷲が保護されていました。

アラスカに４万羽生息している白頭鷲のうち南西部に１万３千羽いるそうです。

At Nature center, this bald eagle which cannot fly anymore, is protected.

Of the 40,000 adult bald eagles estimated to inhabit Alaska, 13,000 live in Southeast Alaska.

白頭鷲はアラスカで最も大きな捕食をする鳥で

翼を広げると２３０ cm 以上にもなるそう

通常、時速５０〜６０kmで飛ぶところ、

いざという時は時速１６０km 程のスピードが出せるらしい。すごい！

The bald eagle is Alaska's largest bird of prey. 

It's wingspan can reach 71/2 feet.

Eagles average 30 to 40 miles per hour in normal flight, 

but can reach speeds up to 100 mph while diving.

アメリカの国鳥に指定されたのは1782年の事。

In 1782, 

the Continental Congress of United States adopted the bald eagle as the nation's symbol.

とにかく水が豊富なので緑がきれい

乾燥しきってるカリフォルニアに分けてほしい。。。

The green is really beautiful because of rich water.

What a difference from drought California!

野生のリス発見！！

でも全く人に動じる事なく、黙々と食べていました。

慣れてるのね。。。。

Wild squirrel!

It is used to being photographed .....

ケーブルカーを降りたところには目を引く看板が。。。。

乗船前の観光客はずらずらと引き寄せられ
ついついお土産のサーモンを購入。商売上手！

This sign lures passenger before embarkation with free sample.

野生の白頭鷲は

レアより大きいです。。。

Bald eagle is bigger than Lea.

 さて、船に戻って本日のディナー
もう、食べてばっかり！
